BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin ETF Makes Impressive Expansion to Canadian Markets

By: Isha Das

BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) has become a standout performer in the Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) sector, amidst a challenging period of net outflows among U.S. Bitcoin ETFs. While the broader Bitcoin ETF market witnessed a total net outflow of $284.1 million over three consecutive days, IBIT defied the trend, recording an impressive inflow of $29.5 million. This inflow is a stark contrast to significant outflows reported by other ETFs, such as Fidelity’s Bitcoin ETF with $113.6 million and ARK’s Bitcoin ETF with $92.4 million outflows. Notably, Grayscale's GBTC saw $89 million leaving, and Bitwise’s BITB faced $18.6 million in withdrawals. The cumulative outflows across the sector exceeded $1 billion over three days, suggesting shifting institutional investment strategies or evolving market sentiments towards Bitcoin.

In addition to its strong performance in the U.S., BlackRock is expanding its IBIT to Canadian markets by introducing dual-currency trading options. This strategic move involves launching two versions of the ETF on Cboe Canada: the Canadian dollar-denominated IBIT and the U.S. dollar-denominated IBIT.U. These ETFs provide Canadian investors with exposure to Bitcoin by tracking its performance, making Bitcoin investment accessible without the complexities of direct ownership. Investors can now acquire Bitcoin exposure through traditional brokerage accounts, avoiding the operational or custody challenges associated with direct Bitcoin acquisition.

Helen Hayes, who leads iShares Canada, emphasized that this expansion signals BlackRock’s commitment to broadening investment accessibility. The Canadian rollout of IBIT underscores BlackRock's robust expansion strategy and its intention to cater to a diverse range of investors seeking Bitcoin exposure. Buoyed by its success in the U.S. market, where it achieved a top 1% ranking by assets, IBIT's Canadian launch is poised to offer a convenient and cost-effective avenue for investors to engage with Bitcoin within their existing financial frameworks. The fund's outstanding performance and subsequent international expansion highlight BlackRock's strategic efforts to capitalize on its growing popularity among investors.
