Ex-Rugby Player Receives Prison Sentence for $900K Crypto Mining Ponzi Scheme

In a significant crackdown on fraudulent activities in the crypto space, former semi-professional rugby player Shane Donovan Moore has been sentenced to two-and-a-half years in federal prison. Moore was found guilty of orchestrating a cryptocurrency mining Ponzi scheme, which defrauded over 40 investors, including many of his fellow sportsmen, of a total exceeding $900,000. This decision comes after a thorough investigation led by the U.S. Department of Justice.

According to the Department of Justice’s announcement, Moore operated the fraudulent scheme through a company named Quantum Donovan LLC from January 2021 to October 2022. He lured investors with the promise of high daily returns of 1%, supposedly generated from investments in cutting-edge cryptocurrency mining equipment. However, instead of purchasing any mining hardware, Moore diverted the funds to support a lavish personal lifestyle.

The swindle involved convincing his peers and other investors that they would receive guaranteed returns from the crypto mining business. However, rather than investing as proposed, Moore spent the money on luxury apartments and designer items, exploiting the trust placed in him by those within the rugby community and beyond.

The case highlights the potential risks associated with investing in cryptocurrency schemes without proper due diligence. Investors are urged to verify the credentials of any investment opportunity and seek liabilities against unregulated entities.
