Sony has made a significant stride into the blockchain landscape with the inauguration of its Ethereum Layer 2 blockchain, Soneium, on its mainnet. The multinational conglomerate revealed this through an official statement, highlighting its ambitions to foster a decentralized internet through this platform. Soneium leverages the OP Stack infrastructure, developed by the Optimism Foundation, aiming to provide seamless blockchain experiences paired with innovative solutions like Sony’s NFT-focused fan engagement platform by SNFT Inc., and an incubator named Soneium Spark to bolster emerging projects within its ecosystem.
The blockchain infrastructure gained traction during its testnet, famously known as Soneium Minato, where it hosted over 32 projects selected from a pool of 1,700 entries for the Spark incubation program. These projects span across various sectors such as entertainment, gaming, social platforms, and finance, marking significant growth within its network, which currently claims over 14 million accounts and 47 million transactions. Sony aims to bridge the gap between traditional Web2 users and the emerging Web3 space, providing creators with robust tools to protect their intellectual property while fostering creativity and innovation. Besides launching the mainnet, Sony is also heralding new projects in the crypto and NFT domains. It is unveiling two significant projects: a fan marketing platform by SNFT Inc. and a revamped S.Blox exchange service. The fan marketing platform provides brands, creators, and enterprises with tools to engage users and utilize NFTs for strategic marketing endeavors. This tool simplifies NFT issuance processes and data analysis, offering an integrated wallet that ensures seamless social and web-based authentication for users. Sony has slated the platform’s pilot run for February 2025, foreseeing active engagement with its entertainment subsidiaries to enrich fan interactions using NFTs. Meanwhile, the S.Blox exchange service, albeit restricted to Japan, will replace WhaleFin with a polished interface and support for more crypto currencies, offering Bitcoin rewards for new accounts and trades. A new mobile application is also slated to elevate user experience, alongside an NFT distribution campaign scheduled for February 2025.
With Soneium, Sony embarks on its journey to build a decentralized internet where creativity thrives freely and creators enjoy equitable value distribution. Sota Watanabe, Director of Sony Block Solutions Labs, mentions, "Our vision with Soneium is simple but ambitious: to build an open internet where creativity flows freely and fairly, and to empower the next wave of users to embrace Web3." This visionary move underlines Sony's commitment to integrating blockchain technology and NFTs into mainstream digital experiences, striving to enhance the bridge between creators and fans.
