Zero-Knowledge Rollups (ZK-Rollups) are an innovative layer 2 scaling solution for Ethereum. They combine hundreds of transactions off-chain into a single batch but use a cryptographic proof, known as a SNARK (Succinct Non-interactive Argument of Knowledge), to ensure each transaction's correctness. This maintains the security and decentralization of the Ethereum network while significantly increasing throughput and reducing gas fees.
ZK-Rollups operate by grouping multiple transfers into a single transaction. The rollup smart contract on the Ethereum mainnet verifies the proof, making it more computationally efficient than verifying each transaction individually. This method also enhances privacy since the details of the transactions are hidden.
